User review: Great little machine!

April 1, 2009 by Melissa Strider

I’ve been using my 10 inch Aspire One for a couple of weeks now. I have both the 8.9 inch and this 10.1 inch Acer Aspire and I use the 10.1 daily. It does everything I need and it is very quick. This little white computer has exceeded my expectations for a low cost netbook, however I have a few negative comments, too.

On the positive side, I really liked the following stuff:

1. The unit is totally responsive with a quick boot time and great web performance. When used with my wireless mouse, it’s almost like working on a desktop computer. The processor speed is truly amazing, allowing me to perform some complex tasks with ease (like Office, web browsing and listening to music at once).

2. The Aspire One comes with a great display! You can see this in any lighting environment. The brightness is adjustable and I like the crisp colors it presents.

3. It’s totally quiet. The fan noise is almost non-existent, so is the heat. This netbook doesn’t get very hot and I never had a problem keeping it on my chest.

4. Very good battery life, usually I don’t have to recharge the Aspire One when I take it out with me.

5. Very easy to upgrade the memory. I ordered additional memory and had it build in within minutes. No problem.

Now, some negative points about the Aspire One:

1. I really don’t like that it doesn’t come with separate restore disks. It’s really irritating when you have to use a separate drive which is not included with the unit, to generate the restoration discs that should be included in the package.

2. Sadly, the keyboard is a bit small to accommodate a touch typist. You can get used to it, but it really cuts down on your typing speed.

3. I find the touchpad difficult to use. I’ve successfully worked around this by buying a wireless mouse. However, this means I have to carry an extra piece of hardware around with me. Kind of defeats the nice small package I was initially attracted to, but I really don’t like the touchpad.

Nevertheless, it’s a great buy for anyone looking for a small, fully functional, affordable and very portable computer. I finish my quick review with a clear recommendation.

Pro & Con

Pro Con
  • Great bright display
  • Very good performance, excellent processor speed for a netbook
  • Easy to upgrade memory
  • No restore disks, you have to generate them yourself
  • Keyboard and touchpad a bit difficult to use, but you can get used to it
